Al Gilbert made the world a better place to live. His talent, passion, discipline, energy, and total being were devoted to helping others achieve their goals. His work was endless—traveling around the country—creating song and dance for children around the world. How he loved to teach and to dance. Everyone he knew loved him! He inspired thousands of individuals and was a mentor to Darryl Retter.

The scholarship is offered to a student with solid technical ability and a willingness to be a leader. The spirit of the Al Gilbert Scholarship is one of love, personal growth, and exceptional dance. We are honored to continue the legacy of a visionary here at R.A.D.

The recipient of this scholarship must meet the high standards set forth by Retter’s Academy of Dance. S/he must adhere to all rules or risk immediate dismissal from Rhythm Machine and/or the studio. The recipient and his/her parents must promote good will at R.A.D. Communication, as always, is of great importance during the term of the Scholarship. All questions and comments must be directed through the front desk.

All Senior Rhythm Machine company members, R & B Members, and those wishing to audition for these companies (must be 13 or older), will have the opportunity to audition Al Gilbert Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will entitle the recipient with a full scholarship at R.A.D. to one dance season October 2008 through June 2009, (Dancer must attend Retter Workshop 2009 and is responsible for fees). The scholarship is fully funded by Darryl Retter and Linda Bernabei-Retter. The scholarship includes all tuition and company fees but does not cover additional expenses such as competition/convention fees, annual fees, costumes, photos, and company attire.

Please note that competition fees for soloists vary from $75 to $100 depending on the competition. An additional costume will be required for the solos, costing approximately $300. This costume fee is due by Thursday, October 2, 2008. The cost of soloist choreography is $600 total. This amount is due in full by Thursday, November 6, 2008. The photograph of the scholarship winner will be displayed with a matte and frame and will cost approximately $200. The photo becomes property of R.A.D. Payment is due in mid-March and a bill will be sent to you regarding exact payment.

2. ATTITUDE – APPLICANT MUST HAVE A STELLAR RECORD OF CONDUCT IN CLASS, (CLASSROOM LEADER – NOT DISTRACTING, TALKING, ETC.) RESPECTFUL TO ALL FACULTY AND STAFF.
3. APPERANCE – APPLICANT MUST UPHOLD THE “RHYTHM MACHINE LOOK” - HAVE HAIR LENGTH 2 INCHES BELOW SHOULDERS (AT ALL TIMES) MAKE-UP NATURAL (NO DARK, SMOKEY EYES, NO EXASGGERATED MAKE-UP, NO JEWELRY (THUMBRINGS, NECKLACES, ETC.)
4. DRESS CODE – APPLICANT MUST HAVE STELLAR RECORD OF DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS. NEAT AND PROFESSIONAL DANCERWEAR (AT ALL TIMES) TO ALL CLASSES. NO ROLLED JAZZ PANTS, NO “PERSONAL” TOPS TO CLASS, NO EXTRAS THAT ATTRACT ATTENTION TO YOU, RATHER THAN TO THE PROGRAM.
5. APPLICANT MUST HAVE UPHELD ALL RHYTHM MACHINE RULES & REGULATIONS FOR THE 2007-2008 DANCE SEASON.

FAILURE TO UPHOLD THESE GUIDELINES WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM RHYTHM MACHINE COMPANY AND SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE REVOKED.


Entry Rules

1. APPLICANT MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF TRAINING AT RETTER’S ACADEMY OF DANCE BEFORE APPLYING FOR THE AL GILBERT SCHOLARHIP.

2. EACH APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT TO R.A.D. ON, OR BEFORE SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 2008, TWO (2) DANCE NUMBERS ON A DVD.

3. DANCE NUMBERS SUBMITTED MUST BE AT LEAST 1 _ MINUTES (90 SECONDS) IN LENGTH, NOT TO EXCEED 2 _ MINUTES.

4. DANCE NUMBER MUST BE TAP (TWO STYLES—i.e., Contemporary and Broadway)

5. ALL MATERIAL MUST BE ORIGINAL AND CHOREGRAPHED SOLELY BY APPLICANT. NO COACHING, ETC., ALLOWED.

6. ALL DANCERS MUST INTRODUCE THEMSELVES ON THE VIDEO AND EXPLAIN (a) why they wish to pursue the field of dance, (b) what the Al Gilbert Scholarship means to them, and (c) what they feel they can offer Retter’s Academy of Dance as the Scholarship Winner.

The winner of the Al Gilbert Memorial Scholarship will be announced after the 2008-2009 Rhythm Machine Company Auditions.
We want to stress the honor that will be bestowed on one loyal and dedicated dancer. In addition to the aforementioned guidelines, the winner must
• Maintain required attendance and positive attitude from past season.
• Promote Retter’s Academy of Dance and display a good attitude and professionalism at all times, including any public event, convention, or performance, and at school.
• Be a role model to all members. Absolutely no gossip or negative behavior/conduct.
• Be available to demonstrate or assist at a minimum one class per week.
• Be available to help and assist the Father/Daughter Dances
• Welcome new dancers to R.A.D. by being an “Ambassador of Goodwill.”
• Active member of Leadership Program at R.A.D.
• Active member of Thoughtfulness Committee

Failure to meet the above requirements will result in suspension from Rhythm Machine Company and scholarship will be revoked.
There will be absolutely no exceptions, as in previous years, to this policy.

Evaluations by directors and faculty members are ongoing. Scholarship recipient must complete evaluation forms and be “reviewed” every three months by directors. Failure to uphold scholarship requirements will have serious consequences.

This scholarship is given with the intention to keep Mr. Gilbert’s memory and all those who dedicated their lives to bringing song, dance, and happiness to so many, alive. What they passed on to us was hope and strength—and in their presence, life was made extraordinary, and so were we. This is the spirit in which this Scholarship will be awarded.

Many people have influenced our lives in the field of dance. Many are with us; many are not. To honor one man in particular, Linda’s beloved teacher, Winston Hemsley, Retter’s Academy of Dance is continuing the scholarship fund for an outstanding student who desires to pursue a career in dance.

The Winston Hemsley Scholarship is one of the highest awards bestowed to a talented dancer at R.A.D. Applicants must approach this scholarship with total commitment and dedication to R.A.D. This award is not only given for financial aid, but also to promote leadership, technical ability, responsibility, self-discipline, and love. Mr. Hemsley taught more than dance!
